Fifth Grade

Below you will find educational materials for fifth grade teachers exploring agriculture in the classroom. All lesson plans were created based on Mississippi’s 2018 College-and-Career Readiness Standards in Math, Science, and Social Studies as well as the National Agricultural Literacy Outcomes, and the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation’s recognized commodities.

This curriculum was developed by the Mississippi State University School of Human Science for the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation’s Ag in the Classroom Program.

Art

Swine: VA: CR2.2.5 a. Demonstrate quality craftsmanship through care for and use of materials, tools, and equipment.

English Language Arts

Beef: W.5.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. SL.5.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Science

Conservation: E.5.10 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the effects of human interaction with Earth and how Earth’s natural resources can be protected and conserved. E.5.10.1 Collect and organize scientific ideas that individuals and communities can use to conserve Earth’s natural resources and systems (e.g., implementing watershed management practices to conserve water resources, utilizing no-till farming to improve soil fertility, reducing emissions to abate air pollution, or recycling to reduce landfill waste).

Corn: E.5.10 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the effects of human interaction with Earth and how Earth’s natural resources can be protected and conserved.

Forestry: E.5.10 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the effects of human interaction with Earth and how Earth’s natural resources can be protected and conserved.

Cotton: P.5.5A Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties of matter.

P.5.5A.3 Analyze matter through observations and measurements to classify materials (e.g., powders, metals, minerals, or liquids) based on their properties (e.g., color, hardness, reflectivity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, response to magnetic forces, solubility, or density).

Honey: L.5.3A.1 Research and communicate the basic process of photosynthesis that is used by plants to convert light energy into chemical energy that can be stored and released to fuel an organism’s activities.

Horticulture: L.5.3A Students will demonstrate an understanding of photosynthesis and the transfer of energy from the sun into chemical energy necessary for plant growth and survival.

L.5.3A.1 Research and communicate the basic process of photosynthesis that is used by plants to convert light energy into chemical energy that can be stored and released to fuel an organism’s activities.

Social Studies

Forage: G.5.2 Describe physical features of the environment. 1. Differentiate between landforms and bodies of water. 2. Identify how physical features impact communities.

Rice: G.5.3 Recognize maps, graphs, and other representations of the earth. Create representations of the earth using technology, maps, and globes. Identify cardinal and intermediate directions (e.g., north, northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest, east, and west). Locate the Mississippi and the United States using maps and globes.
