Capitol Comments – Mississippi State Legislative Session Update Week 3

The 2026 Mississippi Regular Legislative Session continued this week with lawmakers navigating both legislative discussions and also planning for potential weather-related disruptions at the Capitol.

Out of an abundance of caution and with member safety as our top priority, Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation made the decision to cancel our Legislative Reception scheduled for the evening of Monday, January 26th. We appreciate the understanding of our members and legislative partners and look forward to scheduling opportunities to visit with lawmakers when weather conditions improve.

The Mississippi Senate Finance Committee passed the agriculture tax relief bill (SB 2272); a proposal aimed at easing financial pressure on farmers and ranchers by addressing taxation on agricultural inputs and equipment. This marks an important step forward for legislation that directly impacts Mississippi agriculture and rural communities.

As lawmakers return to Jackson next week, attention will quickly shift to committee deadlines and floor action in both chambers. The next major deadline is Tuesday, February 3rd. Legislators have until that date to consider legislation in the respective committees where they have been assigned. In the coming days, legislators will also begin narrowing their focus to bills that have successfully advanced out of committee, setting the stage for more substantive debate and negotiation as the Session moves forward.

Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation will continue monitoring developments at the Capitol, engaging with lawmakers, and providing timely updates on legislation impacting farmers, ranchers, and rural Mississippi.

Please continue to watch for updates as the 2026 Regular Session progresses.
