Voice of Mississippi Agriculture

With only 90 days to meet, the Mississippi Legislature has spent the last two weeks preparing to meet several deadlines, including:

  • Tuesday, February 1 – The deadline for action on general bills and constitutional amendments.
  • Thursday, February 10 – The deadline for floor action on these same general bills and constitutional amendments.

More than 2,557 bills and resolutions have been filed thus far, but more continue to be referred to their respective committees for initial consideration.

Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation policy staff continue to monitor several of those bills, which align with MFBF policy.

  • The House voted overwhelmingly voted to cut income tax with the passage of the Mississippi Tax Freedom Act of 2022. The bill also reduces the car tag rate and grocery tax.
  • Both the House and Senate seem to agree with the need for a teacher pay raise this year. How much is still in question.
  • The Senate approved HB384, a new Congressional District map.
  • HB 1389 and SB 2002, which supports a voluntary grain indemnity program, have both passed out of committee.
  • SB 2007, which states that if substances are added to pure honey they must be properly labeled, passed out of the Senate Agriculture committee.
  • HB 975, to codify eminent domain was passed out of the House Judiciary A committee.
